Casa Batllo, 1905-1907

Casa Mila, or "La Pedrera," 1905-1907

Roof of La Pedrera. Building design was inspired by a quarry, hence the nickname.

Entranceway of Palau Guell, 1885-1890. Unmistakeable use of catenary archways, and the beginnings of Gaudi's rejection of uniformity are evident.

Domed roof to Palau Guell. The dome is the shape of a catenary arch, rotated 360 degrees on its axis to form a three-dimensional structure of the same stability.

Stairwell in Casa Batllo. Gaudi virtually eliminates straight lines and right angles, in favor of more organic forms. A Fibonacci spiral can be seen at the bottom of the banister.

Hallway in Casa Batllo, emphasizing the use of catenary arches.

Room in Casa Batllo. The rippling ceiling, ornate light fixture, and unique columns give the effect of being inside a cavern or even a living animal.

Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926) was a Spanish Catalan architect and a perfect example of art and science working harmoniously as one. His work is strongly characterized by the use of catenary archways, a physical phenomenon which requires no additional support system to be completely stable. He was also inspired greatly by nature and biological structures, thus causing his buildings to feel organic and almost alive.
